A smartwatch is bought for the software and returned for the software. Yet briefs often start with the case shape and the screen size. Scope the software first, and the hardware choices get easier.

Write the feature list per market

Messaging, navigation, payment, music and voice services are different in each region. A watch that ships with the wrong set feels broken even if every feature works. Write one list per target market, and mark each item as built in, downloadable or not offered.

Decide what lives in the watch

Anything that must work when the phone is away belongs on the watch: time, alarms, sensors, workouts, calls, and whatever you promise as standalone. The more that lives on the watch, the more memory, display resolution and battery it needs.

Decide what lives in the app and the server

Setup, history, watch-face store, firmware updates, accounts and health reports belong in the phone app and the server. This is also where a brand’s differentiation is usually most visible, so it deserves its own scope rather than an afterthought.

Standalone or phone-dependent

A cellular module with a SIM slot turns the watch into a standalone device. It also adds antenna space, battery draw and a longer certification path. Decide this before the structure is drawn, because it changes the case.

Health features and claims

Heart rate, sleep and workout tracking are common; anything marketed as a medical measurement is a regulatory topic by itself. Keep the claim aligned with what the sensor and the algorithm can honestly support.

Watch faces and customisation

Watch faces are the cheapest way to make a product feel like a brand. Plan the format, the store and who may publish early, since it affects the app and the server.

Updates after launch

A watch will need updates. Plan over-the-air updates, rollback and the support process from the start.
