An AI companion toy is four regulated products in one body: a radio device, a battery-powered product, a microphone-and-camera device, and a toy. Each one has its own rulebook, and the failures that delay launches are almost always the ones nobody put on the schedule.
The radio: CE and FCC
Any WiFi, Bluetooth or cellular product needs radio and EMC approval for each market. In the EU this is CE under the radio and EMC rules; in the US it is FCC. A pre-certified radio module reduces the testing, but the finished product still needs its own EMC and system tests, because the antenna, the enclosure and the other electronics change the result.
Toy safety: EN 71 and friends
If the product is aimed at children, toy-safety standards apply on top: mechanical and physical properties, flammability, and chemical limits. Small parts, battery access and the surface finish are decided by industrial design, long before a test lab sees the sample.
Batteries and charging
A lithium cell inside a stuffed or child-held product is a compliance topic of its own. The charging circuit, the battery protection and the battery access are designed for it from the beginning, and transport rules for batteries affect how samples and production units are shipped.
Materials: RoHS and REACH
Restricted substances in the electronics, the plastics, the textile and the paint. The supplier chain must be able to give declarations, so do not choose materials your suppliers cannot document.
Microphones, cameras and children’s data
This is the part that surprises first-time teams. A product for children that records voice or images is covered by children-privacy rules, such as COPPA in the US and GDPR provisions for children in the EU, and by app-store review policies. The practical consequences:
- Decide what is processed on the device and what leaves it.
- Make recording state visible on the product.
- Give parents control and a way to delete data.
- Choose cloud services and regions with the target market in mind.
Plan it into the schedule
Put compliance targets in the spec at the start. Test samples go to the lab after the design is frozen but before the mold is signed off, because a failure found after tooling costs a mold round. We design toward CE, FCC, RoHS, REACH, BQB and EN 71 from the first draft.
