Searching for an “OEM manufacturer” or “factory” in China usually hides two different needs. Buyers who mix them up lose months, so it is worth separating them before you write to anyone.

Need one: build a design you already own

An OEM factory builds to your design. You bring the complete package: mechanical files, circuit design, firmware, bill of materials, test method and approved samples. The factory quotes and runs production.

This is the right route when the product is finished. It is the wrong route when it is not, because a factory’s quote assumes that everything it needs to build already exists.

Need two: develop the product, then build it

A development partner works from an earlier point: an idea, a demo, a competitor product to improve on, or a channel waiting for a product. The work before production includes industrial design, structure, circuit and firmware, app and server, certification planning, samples and the tooling that makes the product repeatable.

For connected products — anything with a radio, a battery, a microphone or a camera — this phase is most of the risk. A working demo and a manufacturable product are different things.

How to tell which you need

  • Do you hold final design files and approved samples? Factory.
  • Do you have a demo, a prototype from a dev board, or a concept? Development partner.
  • Do you need an app, a server or certification handled? Development partner.
  • Is a price list or a ready model what you are looking for? Neither. That is a catalogue purchase, and a catalogue supplier is the honest answer.

Questions to ask any manufacturer

  1. At what stage do you join a project? The answer shows whether they develop or only produce.
  2. What do I receive before production starts? Drawings, firmware source, test reports, samples.
  3. Who owns the design files and the firmware? Settle it in writing before the first payment.
  4. How do you handle certification? CE, FCC, RoHS and REACH belong in the design, not after it.
  5. Which products have you taken through the same process? Ask for a description of the path, not only photos.

How we work

3CBAY is a development partner first. Projects begin with a paid development phase (NRE) that defines scope, delivers design and engineering, and produces samples; production follows once the samples are approved. Industrial design, structure, hardware, firmware, app, server and production sit in one team. We also take OEM and ODM work on the same terms. We are not the right fit for buyers who want a catalogue model with their logo on it.
